Ideation

There’s more to great guitar tone than cool amps. It’s also important to find the right effects to complement your sound! But the cost of buying pedals adds up quickly. Getting a great sound on a budget can be a big challenge.

As someone who is into music production, I have always appreciated plugins that don’t cost a fortune and make my life so much easier by making the sound better with just a few clicks. There are some excellent ones out there which provide great function, but a pretty UI makes the experience that much more delightful. I am always on the lookout for pretty and affordable plugins that enhance my sound and add some spice to my music, and I know that I am not alone in this perpetual search. That is why I decided to make one such plugin myself.

How Might We

Design a good quality, intuitive, cost effective VST plugin that is also aesthetically pleasing?

What are the users’ problems?

  • It is hard to find VST plugins that produce good quality sound without breaking the bank.

  • Software that is functionally effective as well as visually appealing simultaneously is hard to find in the market right now unless the user has a lot of money to spend on the product.

How can we solve them?

We could build a good quality, affordable/free VST plugin for beautiful guitar tones specific to soft indie rock dream pop and other similar sounding genres - that is also aesthetically pleasing to give rise to an experience that is functionally effective as well as visually satisfying to the user at the same time.

The Solution

Keeping in mind all of the points mentioned so far, I finally started designing a plugin that would serve the technical as well as visual needs of the user well.

I tried to imagine the plugin in a number of different aesthetics and color schemes.

Final Design

I retained some of the neon and dreamy elements that I was considering before. I made some holographic knobs which can be turned to change the values on all the different effects on this plugin.

I added a preset dropdown for a bunch of pre-loaded combinations of effect settings that the user is free to try out, and also tweak as per their requirement. There is also a Randomizer option in the Presets menu, which gives the user random settings on the effects, with a unique random combination every single time it is selected.
